AUSTIN, Texas -- Soulful singer-songwriter Paula Nelson and her band, recently seen playing shows for music industry reps and fans in Nashville that earned glowing reviews, come to Vancouver, B.C., after New Year's to play rockers, ballads, power anthems and love songs from their latest album, LUCKY 13 (Pedernales Records).Nelson and the Paula Nelson Band play at 9 p.m. Wednesday, January 14, at The Biltmore Cabaret, 395 Kingsway. Tickets are $13-$15; information: 604.676.0541. Doors open at 8 p.m. Also on the bill are The Grange, Greff Band and Petunia.
In Nashville in November, Nelson and the band drew praise from the state's Daily Times: "... And with a stellar album like LUCKY 13, that's a more-than-admirable effort -- it's downright successful, because that husky, sexy voice and those killer riffs and that tight rhythm section make for something honest and true."
MusicRow.com made note of the album's latest single, the Nelson original "Every Now and Then," saying she "displays an attractive bluesy lilt in her country phrasing. ..." Another song on the disc, the elegant "Day to Day Love," features Willie Nelson and Paula's brother, Luke Nelson, but Texas Music Times pointed out when it was released that LUCKY 13 "stands all on its own with or without a famous name. A must-have."
Backed by a guitar-driven Southern rock sound, the singer-songwriter with alto-to-soprano lead vocals, strong keyboards learned at her aunt's knee, and writing depth and breadth grew up in the aura of her outlaw-country music-making father and his compadres, influenced by the vocals of such models as Rita Coolidge and the caring encouragement of Austin club owner Clifford Antone. By the early 1990s, she was performing all over Austin and appearing with her father often.
Onstage with Nelson -- also a martial-arts master, stunt woman and stunt driver, and actress (her first movie, "Conflict of Interest," due for release in 2009) -- are guitarist Landis Armstrong, drummer Kevin Remme and well-known Austin vocalist-guitarist George Devore.

John Dragonetti and Blake Hazard recorded Honeysuckle Weeks, their second album as The Submarines, as summer vines blossomed and the sun coaxed green grasses up around the stones leading from their East LA home to their garage-turned-home-studio. Honeysuckle Weeks weaves together themes drawn from their immediate surroundings and experience: the garden outside, and the push and pull of life and love inside. |
|
Honeysuckle Weeks also marks the duo’s first album made collaboratively; Declare a New State was written separately during a breakup and recorded upon their reunion. While some songs started with a traditional guitar-in-hand approach, many began with instrumental tracks composed by Dragonetti, which Hazard then completed with words and melody, drawing on each of the their musical strengths. The record is as diverse in theme as it is in sound. The most prevalent theme in the record, however, is the garden. Whether it’s thorns wrapped around the heart in “The Thorny Thicket” or plants taking back the city in “Fern Beard,” the leafy tangle surrounding The Submarines’ studio made its way into the songs with a fresh energy. The days when the garden grew while the album blossomed were The Submarines’ Honeysuckle Weeks.
Equally indebted to the Shins, Brian Wilson, and John Lennon, the morning benders mix sunny pop songcraft with jangling guitars, double-tracked vocals, and collegiate wit. Frontman Chris Chu launched the group as a solo project in 2005, using a single microphone and laptop to record his early songs. The Loose Change EP arrived in September 2006, and Chu subsequently opened the benders' doors to several of his UC Berkeley classmates, including drummer Julian Harmon, bassist Tim Or, and guitarist/organist Joe Ferrell. A second EP, Boarded Doors, appeared in early 2007 and was well received by such Bay Area publications as The SF Weekly, prompting Chu to take a part-time job as a studio engineer in order to finance an additional record. Largely produced, engineered, and mixed by Chu himself, the full-length Talking Through Tin Cans arrived in May 2008 on the newly minted +1 Records label. |
