On the 14th June Jordan Rakei will release his new album “Origin” on Ninja Tune. It includes new singles “Say Something” and “Minds Eye”, and is overtly inspired by dystopian visions of our future, with many of the album lyrics exploring technological growth, and how it affects our sense of humanity.

With a fistful of highly praised releases under his belt and a timeless soulful, jazz and hip-hop driven sound, the 26 year-old multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and producer is a rare talent. Born in a quiet town in New Zealand, Jordan moved to Australia at the age of three, spending most of his childhood in Brisbane. In 2014, his “Groove Curse” EP garnered strong support from North America and Europe, coaxing Jordan to make the 10,000 mile journey to live in London. He quickly made a name for himself in the UK lending vocals to Disclosure’s 2015 album “Caracal”. It was 2016’s self-released debut album “Cloak” that proved he was an artist ready and able to make huge waves with his own sound though. He went on to sign with independent label Ninja Tune, releasing his second LP “Wallflower” in 2017, followed by the single “Wildfire” a year later. Acclaimed by the likes of The FADER, Evening Standard and Mixmag, he has clocked up over 100m Spotify streams, been voted as the #2 Album of the Year at Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide Awards, had four singles included on the BBC 6 Music playlist, and performed live at BBC’s legendary Maida Vale studios with Moses Boyd, Joe Armon-Jones, Oscar Jerome and Binker Golding for BBC 1Xtra, as well as support from BBC R1’s Annie Mac, Phil Taggart and 1Xtra’s Mistajam and Jamz Supernova, plus NPR, KCRW MBE, COLORS Berlin and Boiler Room.

Jordan’s time in London has also drawn him into a network of like-minded individuals, forming friendships that have spawned many professional collaborations. He is part of the “Are We Live” crew with Tom Misch, Barney Artist and Alfa Mist (with whom he shares a studio), who put on gigs, record podcasts and make music together and Jordan has written, produced and performed on four tracks for Loyle Carner’s new album (including recent single ‘Ottolenghi’ and ‘Loose Ends’ feat. Jorja Smith), and he has also collaborated frequently with Richard Spaven (drummer and don of the British jazz scene who has collaborated with Flying Lotus, Jose James and Mala). Bradley Zero – the founder of the dance party and label Rhythm Section – released Jordan’s “Joy, Ease, Lightness” EP under the pseudonym Dan Kye in 2016, and Simon Green aka Bonobo also included an exclusive Dan Kye track on his recent “Fabric presents Bonobo” DJ mix, having previously invited Jordan to perform alongside him at Alexandra Palace in 2018. Beyond the London scene too, there is no doubt that the depth and craftsmanship of Jordan’s music is turning heads worldwide. He recently joined Chic co-founder Nile Rodgers in the studio for a writing session and, following his show at Cape Town Jazz Festival last year, Jordan came off stage to find Robert Glasper and Terrace Martin (producer for Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg and Herbie Hancock) waiting in the wings to commend him for his performance, with Martin wasting no time in inviting him out to LA to record together in his studio.

With previously sold out US and Australian headline tours, as well as performances at iconic venues and festivals – including Glastonbury, Pitchfork Avant-Garde Block Party, SXSW, Pukkelpop, BBC Biggest Weekend 2018, two sold out nights at Ronnie Scott’s, and a DJ set at Fabric (under his Dan Kye alias) – Jordan announced his biggest World tour to date, which includes a stop at London’s Roundhouse on 18th October 2019.

“From doing shows across the world now, we’ve realised that, living in Japan, there’s more need to look around,” begins DYGL singer and guitarist Nobuki Akiyama. “When we went to New York, we made some friends, but we found that only two or three people even knew The Libertines out there! But we live on an island, and the underground music scene isn’t very big, so we need to look outside it.”

Formed in Tokyo at one of the city’s regular after-college music clubs dubbed ‘The Circle’, DYGL (pronounced ‘Dayglo’) might have begun via a hometown tradition, but it’s in this cross-continental, wide-reaching approach that they’ve truly found their place.

Meeting back in 2012, the group started as a trio, with guitarist Yosuke Shimonaka and drummer Kohei Kamoto bonding over their Circle’s noise and avant garde leanings. “When we started it was quite punk, without any melodies – just playing hard and shouting,” laughs the singer. “It wasn’t really based on our influences.” Those influences, however, had always tended towards the UK and US’ alternative guitar scenes. Nobuki cites Britpop and grunge, as well as formative 00s bands like The Strokes and Pete’n’Carl’s aforementioned Libertines as key inspirations; by the time that bassist Yotaro Kachi joined a couple of years later, the quartet had begun to take those ideas and run with them.

Graduating from the Circle but still remaining together, the band soon realised that, in order to progress past the Japanese alt scene that they describe as “cool, but still really small”; they would need to physically move beyond it. And so, spurred on by a love of cult garage label Burger Records and the gaggle of rock’n’rollers associated with them, DYGL upped sticks to LA. “We didn’t have any contacts out there, we didn’t have any record label, we were doing everything ourselves,” explains Nobuki. “But eventually we started making friends, and when we went to New York, we found we had some kind of connection with [The Strokes’ guitarist] Albert Hammond Jr through a mutual friend who was working for him in Japan. He introduced us and Albert ended up recording our first album.”

If it sounds like something of a fairy-tale – band grow up listening to their hero, move to the other side of the world and become friends – then it’s one only made more surreal by the events that occurred within. “[Albert] was this weird guy; he’s quite chill, but then sometimes he acts like a teenager, watching ‘Trainspotting’ or some kind of weird stuff while we were recording,” laughs the singer. “He’ll be playing basketball, and then suddenly he’ll really focus on recording and be really professional. He has so many aspects in the same character.” But while sitting in a New York studio with an indie icon might have been on none of the quartet’s predicted to-do lists, it did yield 2017 debut Say Goodbye To Memory Den – a record full of infectious, earworm hooks and doe-eyed jangles that set them on a bigger path, with tours across Asia, Europe and beyond soon following.

Then came time to consider its follow-up. But, as the age-old ‘difficult second album’ trope suggests, sometimes this process is easier said than done. “After spending time with the [debut] and playing shows, I started realising that I still needed to explore more of myself and to express more personality than on that first album,” says Nobuki. “We were supposed to record a year ago, but we wanted it to be a big move from that album so we decided to postpone because we weren’t ready.”

Instead, realising that they needed to “change the environment”, the band flew to London, where they’ve been based for the best part of a year now. Immediately settling into the rhythm of the city, the move began to yield results and quickly the seeds of what would become second album Songs of Innocence & Experience began to sow.

“The album title is quoted by the title of the poetry book by William Blake ‘Songs of Innocence and of Experience’ because I felt some connection between his work and my lyrics,” explains Nobuki. “The songs on this album are a personal questioning and contradiction in this life or world, rather than presenting a specific answer. Maybe it’s about coming of age; maybe it’s more than that. It’s quite related to personal feelings.”

Like their debut, the record retains the 60s influences that have littered themselves across guitar music ever since, but it also succeeds in DYGL’s aim of expanding their palette. Fusing in their love of hip-hop beats and ambient sounds, their follow-up is a more experimental, more fleshed out thing.

Even more notably, Nobuki’s lyrics and concepts this time round have found their own, important niche. The appeal, he explains, of that Blake reference is in the “contradiction” it suggests. “The [ideas] are connected to each other, but there’s conflict, which is what I wanted for this album,” he says. “I grew up in a Christian church, but now I’m doing this rock’n’roll thing. It’s indie music, but I’m inspired by other things. I’m living in England, but I’m from an Asian country. I’m a man, but I’m quite feminine. There are all these contradictions happening within me, and I wanted to express that in the album.”

This idea of battling societal norms, especially those prescribed by the strict Japanese culture he grew up in, is something that writes itself all over new single ‘Spit It Out’. A garage-infused fuzzy belter, its immediacy belies a more serious message at its heart. “’Spit It Out’ stands for the idea of saying whatever you want. In Japan, so many people have started to be more conservative over these past few years” the frontman explains. “Talking about politics and sexuality and these kind of things is sometimes offensive to Japanese society, so people try to be quiet but it’s really stressful for everyone. These lyrics are based on that: to say what you want to say if you think it’s important.”

Forthcoming single ‘Don’t You Want To Dance In This Heaven’ also tackles an element of this repression, specifically relating to the country’s archaic Fuieho law, which, until 2015, forbid people from dancing after midnight. “The government thought that clubs and venues might be promoting drugs and other things, so they banned dancing,” he shrugs, with an understandably frustrated look. “It’s a symbol of our society – the law has changed now, but only recently.”

Meanwhile closing the album is the beautifully delicate ‘Behind The Sun’ and it’s moving influences offer a rippling effect across the whole album, as Nobuki explains, “There’s a lyric in ‘Behind The Sun’, “If I could swim across the stars to fly to what awaits me behind the sun”. In my vision I have an image like floating in outer space alone with no sound around, so we asked the designer (Jordanne Chant) to make the artwork related to that. It’s the airship flying in front of the sun, a bit emotionlessly, but still a bit sadly secret.”

Continuing he says, “In this album I think I felt both sides of life, pure innocence and some kind of broken unreasonable experience. It could be quite depressing and sad, but at the same time there’s some cheerful, fun melodies, some passions and anger, and some comforting silence. I think it’s all connected and has a meaning to each other, like our lives itself. It’s not like looking for the answer; it’s more like singing some contradiction and questions as it is like some abstract drawings. But I hope it could be still giving people who listen to it some energy and passions for music, and for their lives.”

Recorded with former Test Icicle-turned-production-whizz Rory Atwell across various studios from Wales to London, via a special day at Abbey Road, Songs of Innocence & Experience is an album that takes up the dual mantle of making an overt statement, but never at the expense of keeping it dancing. For DYGL, however, the two ideas are kind of the same thing. “Do want you want to do, say what you want to say and try and make a change. If people can do it over here, then maybe we can do it in Japan,” says Nobuki.

With a fanbase rapidly accruing across the continents, and Asian and US tours already looming over the coming months, DYGL are already making borders seem as outdated as those killjoy laws.

When writing Portraits, Vancouver songwriter Louise Burns went back to where it all began: Los Angeles, the same city where she got her big break two decades earlier as the bassist of teen pop band Lillix. But while those early years had been full of dizzying highs and crushing lows, she now had the poise and self-assurance of a seasoned songwriter. 

“L.A. is a very specific place for me,” she reflects. “It reminds me of some really bittersweet memories — some really happy ones and some really awful ones. This record was about embracing my past rather than trying to hide it or be self-deprecating. It’s okay for me to feel proud of having done all this weird shit when I was really young.” 

Louise spent a wildly prolific month in Los Angeles in early 2018, working on sparkling electronic pop songs with collaborators like Damian Taylor (Arcade Fire, the Killers), Stint (Carly Rae Jepsen, Santigold) and Jasper Leak (Sia). This was the first time Louise had worked with co-writers on her own material, and it helped to unlock some of her most emotionally forthright songs yet.

“I normally don’t like telling people how I feel,” she admits. “Pop music allows me to be vulnerable. I’m hiding behind seemingly joyful, danceable music, but I’m getting away with saying something more substantial.” Damian Taylor acted as Louise’s co-producer and right-hand man, and he encouraged her to get autobiographical with her lyrics. 

Unlike her prior albums — 2011’s Mellow Drama, 2013’s The Midnight Mass and 2017’s Young Mopes — which had been shrouded in reverb and gothic mystery, Portraits is unflinchingly direct. The towering “Cry” sets lyrics about emotional repression against a backdrop of towering hooks and shimmering new wave guitars, while “Just Walk Away” is a bubbly blast of tropical pop. The sighing dream pop anthem “Cheers” presents stark lyrics about growing up in the music industry and the resulting eating disorder, and “Everything You Got” splits the difference between pulsing dance grooves and heavy-lidded soft rock.

The soaring melodies are instantly catchy, and the twinkling sophisti-pop synth-scapes are the result of Louise’s burgeoning side-career as a producer. Having built her own Amethyst Studios in her East Vancouver home, she’s been co-writing and producing for other bands, and Portraits is the first time she’s put those new skills to use in her own music.

After the initial sessions in Los Angeles, she went back home to Vancouver to perfect her new material. She took a hands-on approach during every moment of making the new record, acting as curator for a dream team of collaborators. She got additional synths from Matt Robertson (Björk, ANOHNI), jazz sax from Dominic Conway, guitars from Darcy Hancock (Ladyhawk) and Jason Corbett (ACTORS), percussion from Pedro Dzelme (who also served as audio engineer), and drum samples from David Prowse (Japandroids). Singers Hannah Georgas, Alanna Finn-Morris (Fionn) and Jody Glenham contributed to some of the backing harmonies. 

This process was a culmination of everything Louise has experienced in her 20 years in the music industry — both a celebration of her past and a bold step into the future.

“When I first came out as a solo artist, it wasn’t really cool to be a pop artist,” she reflects. “A lot of my indie rock peers were these really serious people who thought it was silly. I should have said, “I sold a hundred thousand records before I was 18. What have you done?’”

In the heady days of the early 1990s, a wave of intrepid young bands made some unexpected connections between their post-punk approach to music, the exultant electronic reverberations from the early days of Acid House and the sonic sculptures crafted by classic producers like Phil Spector. As these sounds coalesced, Spector’s vaunted “Wall Of Sound” would be a handy touchstone for the immersive latticework of distortion and melody that would be off-handedly labeled later as “Shoegaze”.

Even amongst a quasi-movement as loosely defined and musically divergent as this, Seefeel emerged as the black sheep. Conceived by Mark Clifford and Sarah Peacock, Seefeel immediately amalgamated electronics in ways most of their peers in traditional bands would never dream of, these sounds fused deeply with guitar, drums and bass into urgent melodic waves that on early releases like Quique and Succour oscillated between hopefulness, introspection and downright menace. As Warp co-founder Steve Beckett says, “Seefeel were the

first band that Warp signed who had guitars – they were brave to sign to us because they became the ‘older siblings’ in the family and took all the flak by breaking the unwritten rules of an (up until then) purely dance label.

After 1995’s ‘Succour’ they stopped performing live, but we always kept in touch and then for the first Warp20

show in Paris we asked if they would play.”

The immediate result of their live reformation in Paris was the single “Faults”, the band’s ranks now including bassist Shigeru Ishihara and former Boredoms drummer Iida Kazuhisa (aka E-Da). Their first release since 1996’s (CH-VOX), “Faults” proved to be a clear and welcome progression for a group that had never been predictable. Drawing on everything from gamelan and krautrock to the fringes of underground bass music, Seefeel’s new material has been met with a resounding “welcome back” and an instant affinity with new peers such as Gang Gang Dance, HEALTH, Battles and Salem.

Moonchild is a combination of three independent, strong-willed spirits—Amber Navran [vocals, tenor saxophone, flute, keyboards, synth bass, drum programming], Andris Mattson [trumpet, flu-gelhorn, keyboards, synth bass, guitar, drum programming], and Max Bryk [alto saxophone, clarinet, keyboards, synth bass, drum programming]. The resulting union yields an ever-evolving fusion of alternative R&B and neo-soul. For as singular as each personality may be, they all participate equal-ly in writing, producing, tracking, and mixing their records, collaborating as true equal partners. Not only do they create as a unit, but they also evolve, grow, and transform as one.

“Our chemistry as writers was pretty instantaneous from the start,” explains Andris. “The first tune we came up with, we all sat on a piano bench together and wrote as a unit. Nowadays, each of us has our own studio setup and are constantly making beats and writing songs on our own. We’ll of-ten send each other emails of beats we made and then get together to expand them into full songs. We have so much trust in each other during the writing process.”

As Moonchild, the whole becomes greater than the sum of its parts—never more so than on their fourth full-length, Little Ghost [Entertainment One].

After that first shared piano bench session at the University of Southern California, the group un-veiled their debut Be Free in 2012. Please Rewind followed three years later, and 2017’s Voyager saw them ascend to new critical peaks. NPR Music touted the record among, “Five R&B Albums You Slept On In 2017,” and JAZZ FM named them “Soul Act of the Year” for 2018. “Cure” toppled 8 mil-lion Spotify streams, and “The List” exceeded 7 million plays on Youtube.

Along the way, the trio performed headline shows everywhere from the United States and Europe to Asia, and supported other tours for the likes of The Internet, Kamasi Washington, and more. As they began writing and recording Little Ghost in 2018, the individual progression of each musician informed and elevated the creative process. While laying down tracks at a Lake Arrowhead retreat, Andris dove further into the guitar, incorporating it at the core of the new music.

“The three of us are always experimenting with new programs and gear and trying to improve our craft individually,” he goes on. “I’ve been so into guitar, so that’s a big shift from previous Moonchild albums. The acoustic and ukulele really expanded our sound. The keyboard-driven sounds and horns are still there, but they’re intertwined with guitar.”

“The evolution connects to the title,” adds Amber. “At the end of a star’s life, the gas expands into space and leaves a really beautiful nebula, and there is one up there called Little Ghost. We thought it was a cool concept of expansion, mirroring what we were doing as a group.”

The first single “Too Much to Ask” illuminates that expansion. Andris pairs an electric piano patch with the guitar and ukulele over a skittering groove as Amber’s raspy delivery rolls from a near-whisper to a soulful swoon.

“It’s about realizing you’re in a relationship with someone who’s halfway out the door – who doesn’t care like you do,” she says. “Often you come to that realization one hint at a time, with the all little things they don’t do.”

Eliciting a raucous reaction by playing horns together live, the band “incorporated more horns than ever before,” according to Max. Not only do horn solos blare and bounce through “Money” and “Come Over,” but they kickstart the momentum on the opener “Wise Women” where jazz-y shak-ers and hi-hats give way to a breathy clarion call for female empowerment as Amber sings, “Go on and prove them wrong.”

“‘Wise Women’ is just about making things happen for yourself and not waiting for opportunities to come,” she elaborates.

Ukulele and piano converge for a dreamy dynamic on “The Other Side,” while everything concludes on the sweeping string outro of “Still Wonder.” It serves as a cinematic send-off befitting of the 14-track journey.

“Writing together is ultimately therapeutic,” Amber leaves off. “I hope we give listeners something they can relate to and find comfort in. It’s what music does for us.”

“We were obsessed with crafting this record,” concludes Max. “It got us really excited every day. Maybe it can inspire others to pursue their own art or anything that makes them feel good.”

Since their formation in 2013, New York’s Future Punx have earned a reputation as one of the city’s most explosively exciting bands. Synergizing the most infectious sounds of post-punk, new wave, and mutant disco, the quartet coined a new genre with the title of their 2015 debut LP This Is Post-Wave. While drawing on timeless influences from DEVO, Talking Heads, and Orange Juice, the sensory overloading experience of their live performances usher in a new musical dawn. Combining mesmerizing visuals with propulsive electronic beats, scorching instrumentation, and never repeating set lists, they imagine a utopia where ravers, punks, and hippies can peacefully co-exist.

Though based in Brooklyn, the origins of Future Punx date back to the DIY punk scene of Denton, Texas with former members of Wax Museums, Teenage Cool Kids, and Fergus & Geronimo. When the latter band was rendered inactive by the rapid success of Andrew Savage’s band Parquet Courts, the remaining members of Fergus & Geronimo regrouped as Future Punx. Before relocating to New York, Pickering also launched the label Dull Tools with Savage to release their own music alongside acclaimed artists such as PC Worship and Pill.

In 2016, Future Punx’ duel frontmen Pickering and Jake Pepper (vocals/guitar) reset the band’s line-up with the addition of powerhouse drummer Nicholas Martin and synth player/vocalist Heather Strange, who has been with the group since day one as their mastermind behind their light shows. In addition to sharing stages with contemporaries Priests, Shopping, and Guerilla Toss, they have performed with NYC legends such as Suicide’s Martin Rev and The Contortions’ James Chance. Touring from house shows in Puerto Rico to anarchist punk squats in Europe to bars and basements across North America, the quartet has developed a unique ability to electrify any audience in their path.
